Profile

Former production electrician / technical manager / production manager with 15 years experience of small to large scale touring venues and tours. Completed an MFA in Lighting Design and teaching / designing in Northern California until June 2002. Available for Freelance Design. Seeking Design and teaching work from September 2002 in Britain.

Lighting Design Related Experience

February 03 to Present: Lighting Designer / Lecturer in Performance Design and Technology, School of Performance and Cultural Industries, Bretton Hall Campus, Wakefield, University of Leeds, UK. Teaching on BA Production Design and Technology, with particular responsibilities for the Technical Management Options. Department liason on the building of the "The New Theatre", Bretton Hall campus.

September 02 to Present: Freelance Lighting Designer and Production Electrician, London UK. As of Dec 02 - Designs at Battersea Arts Centre (BAC), Hoxton Hall, ICA; Electrician for Fisher Productions. Architectural design of casino exterior.

August 01 to June 02: Lighting Designer / Faculty - Department of Theatre Arts, California State Univerity - Chico USA. Teaching Courses in Lighting Design, Interior Design Lighting, and StageCraft. Designs for the department - Blue Leaves and Street Scene directed by Randy Wonzong, Pajama Game, Directed by Joel Rogers.

June to August 01 & 02: Lighting Designer, Young Dancers in Performance, Margaret Greenham Theatre, The Banff Centre , Alberta, Canada. Designed lighting for 14 short dance pieces ranging from Jazz to Ballet. Choreographers - Brian McDonald, Annette Av Paul, Susan Toumine, David LaHay, Maureen Eastick, Karen du Plessis, and Vicki St. Denys.

September 99 to June 2001: MFA Lighting Design Student - Cincinnati College - Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Courses on Lighting Design, Architectural Lighting, Scenic Design, Drafting, Theatre History, Directing, Aesthetics, CAD, Script Analysis. Lighting for CCM Productions - Les Mamelle and Savitri - Dir. Jose Maria Condemi; As You Like It, Dir. - Terrell Finney; My One and Only, Dir. Aubrey Berg; Rusalka, Dir. Malcolm Fraser (Thesis Show May 2001).

Dec 98 to September 99: Lighting Supervisor / Production Electrician – Opera North, Leeds   Occasional Relights, liaising with lighting designers  notably Hugh Vanstone on Carmen.

Apr 97 to Aug 98: Assistant Production Manager / Training Coordinator - Theatre Arts, The Banff Centre, Canada. Liaising with lighting designers and setting up computer resources. Lighting design for The Spaces in Between, Choreographer Karen Barkley. Web site design.

1986/87 and 1989- Aug. 1996: Theatre Electrician / Technical Manager, St Donats Arts Centre and Co.-Production Manager and/or touring technician for Music Theatre Wales - on up to 3 tours per year (to 1993). Informal design of 750+ shows that arrived without any lighting person, design of 6 – 10 amateur shows per year, and relights for the touring music theatre companies mainly Music Theatre Wales e.g. Martyrdom of St Magnus and Fall of the House of Usher (LD Ace McCarron), Wizard of Jazz (LD and Director – Paul Stebbings), The Crossing (LD Peter Mumford). Stage; atmospheric and architectural lighting design for Vale of Glamorgan, Crafts in Action and Beyond the Border Festivals.

1988-89: Electrics Intern, The Theatre Complex, Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada. Lighting training and work.  Lighting Design for Winter Studio Opera. 

1981-86: Head of Lighting Section / Crew, University of Bradford Theatre in the Mill and Students Union Technical Services Association, Bradford, West Yorkshire UK. Informal lighting design for visiting rock groups, numbering hundreds notably The Housemartins, The Q Tips, and Mari Wilson.

1982-85 Summers: Quaker Youth Theatre, c/o Friends House, Euston Rd, London NWI 2BJ: Lighting Designer, Operator and Rigger - two tours and three shows.

Other Work Experience

April 2000 - June 2001: Adjunct Professor of Lighting Design - Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.  Taught four quarters of Lighting One, and three quarters of Lighting Intro.

1989 - June 1996: Various Part time responsibilities - Atlantic College, St Donats Castle, Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, UK: Teacher of Peace and Conflict Studies of the International Baccalaureate. Teaching and supervision of Theatre Arts. House tutor, Staff of inshore rescue unit.  Head of Video Service.

1999-2001: MFA Lighting Design - Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, Ohio; 3.65 GPA, Expected Graduation June 8th 2001.

1994-96: Post Graduate Certificate in Education - Bridgend College, University of Wales; Teaching Certificate for Further Education Teaching (16+) Pass.

1986-88: Barry Technical College, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales: City and Guilds 236 (day release)  Electrical installation.  6 Distinctions  plus 1 Credit in electronics (Approx. Equiv = US Journeyman)

1981-85: University of Bradford, England:  BA (Honours) Peace Studies Upper Second

Awards / Scholarships / Specialist Courses

September 1998: Varilight Installers Course (one day) - Varilight in Northolt, London, and Strand 500 series console programing course (two day) - Strand Lighting in Chiswick, London.

January 2000: National Opera Association - First Prize for the production of Les Mammelles de Tiresias in Category IV (Studio Opera).

October 2000: Ohio Valley Section USITT - Eziekel Award - Outstanding Design for As You Like It in the Graduate Section. Exhibition of work touring US during 2001.

November 2000: ETC One of 12 recipients from the United States awarded a full scholarship with conference fees, flight and accommodation to the LDI Show in Los Vegas, Nevada. - ETCs Web Page Recreated Here

December 2000: Broadway Lighting Master Class Participant.

March 2001: Ohio Valley Section USITT - Competition winner, Scholarship of $300 towards cost of USITT conference in Long Beach.

March 2001: International Design Symposium - Two day seminar prior to USITT Conference.

From 1984 on: I have attended most years one or more of ABTT, PLASA, USITT, LDI and Lightfair shows, attending sessions and browsing the show floors.

Wide range of computer skills including AutoCAD 14 / 2000, Vectorworks 8, Lightwright 3, Photoshop 5, Excel, Word, Win 98/NT and Mac. 

Mountain hiking & biking, skiing, snowboarding, windsurfing, photography, swimming, distance running, travel, theatre and live music.
